Of course, this fact won't stop the people who have a vested interest in promoting the suburbs as idealistic solutions from continuing their attempts to do so. At the same time, however, it doesn't place the metropolitan region in any stronger of a position to compete on a global level. What exactly does suburban Butler County in PA or Medina County in OH (Cleveland-Akron) have on Shanghai, London or Rio de Janeiro? Perhaps if they combined their efforts with those of their respective larger metropolitan areas, they could respond with a meaningful answer to this question.<br /><br />The "broken mirror" approach to economic development and governance--my term for urban-suburban parochialism--is counterproductive, wasteful, and a major impediment to regional strength and vitality.
