In 1925, urban planner & historian Lewis Mumford described four “great tides” of migration that reflected the economic transformation of the US. Eight decades later, Robert Fishman (professor of architecture & urban planning at the University of Michigan) noted the large-scale return of people to global cities, labeling it the Fifth Migration. Today’s great tide, the Sixth Migration, is ebbing from global cities & towards a better quality of life.

Rust Valley
I'm rolling out the welcome wagon for a new Rust Belt Blogger, Rust Valley:
Rust Valley is a set of writing and collected data about Technology and Life in Pittsburgh. It’s written by me, Todd Underwood. I’m moving from Lebanon, NH to Pittsburgh, PA.
An in-migrant to Pittsburgh? I think Hell just froze over.
My partner got a job at UPMC (so the health economy drives inmigration, obviously) and I am along for the ride. I do tech work and mostly work with a distributed team who are all over the midwest and northeast (the company I work for is headquartered in New Hampshire) so moving won't affect my current job. I do hear bad things about the job market in Pittsburgh, but since it doesn't affect me yet, I haven't worried about it too much.
I really enjoy this blog and am looking forward to reading and writing considerably more about Pittsburgh in the near future.
