Effacing the Political Landscape

The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette is probing where Charlotte, NC went right and Pittsburgh went wrong. The Post-Gazette plays up the different regional histories, but the key is the legal geography. Charlotte boomed because there was little restriction on development and business, including banking. Pittsburgh did well in the wake of banking deregulation, but that would only go so far in a region where political boundaries continue to frustrate creativity.

Want to know where the next boom will take place? Look for the legal frontier. Way back when, Pittsburgh used to be that place.
